After more than two decade’s worth of collaboration, Bruce Reed and TJ Burke formed Second Sleep in 2014 after both relocating from the East Coast to Portland, Oregon.

Pulling from influences like Russian Circles, Mogwai and June of 44, Second Sleep spent a year crafting their ethereal brand of heavy, experimental instrumental music that refuses to follow post-rock rules.

Their debut effort, affectionately titled “The Red EP,” deconstructs and incinerates anything that vaguely resembles romanticism. The poetry of a Second Sleep song is more Bukowski than Rilke—refusing to (unless you’re one of the lucky ones) let you in on the joke.
Philosophically, Second Sleep delicately and unapologetically straddles a line somewhere between post-punk and pop. “We decided to write concrete songs. I wanted to write parts that would mimic what vocals would do,” says co-founder and guitar player Bruce Reed.

In fact, simply lumping Second Sleep into the post-rock category is pure laziness. The label doesn’t fit. Both sonically and philosophically they have more in common with Joy Division and The Birthday Party than Godspeed You Black Emperor.

Second Sleep will release their debut release “The Red EP” on limited edition Cassette on boutique Portland-based indie imprint, Holiday Breath Records in June 2017.
